An MA Programme that does not train students for a profession needed on the labour market is doomed to fail: sooner or later, it will die. This Masterclass of Literary Translation is an academic, literary and editorial project that also promotes Romanian literature in the world, by translating it into English.
The fifth edition of the Masterclass for literary translation "Lidia Vianu's Students Translate" took place between 25–29 November 2019, at the University of Bucharest. Seventeen literary translators, two literary agents and one cultural manager have talked and worked with the graduates of the MA Programme for the Translation of the Contemporary Literary Text (MTTLC).
Nowadays, literary translation, as a profession, has changed a lot. English has become the language of the globe. Many writers want to be read all over the world, and consequently they want to be translated into English. The organisers of this Masterclass [Lidia Vianu and Headsome Communication] meant to explain this change to the students and guide them towards it in a very practical way.
During the five days of the Masterclass, the students met professional literary translators: Mihaela Buruiană, Ionela Chirilă, Dan Croitoru, Iustina Croitoru, Vali Florescu, Mihaela Ghiță, Bogdan Ghiu, Iulia Gorzo, Radu Paraschivescu, Luana Schidu, Claudiu Sfirschi–Lăudat, Miruna Voiculescu. They were also informed about important professional associations such as the Romanian Writers' Union, the Romanian Association of Literary Translators, important Romanian publishing houses (Humanitas, Polirom, Art), the communication agency run by Oana Boca Stănescu. Two literary agents (Livia Stoia and Marilena Iovu) explained what a literary agent does. Nicolae Mandea, stage director and professor at the Theatre Academy, discussed the difficulties of supertitles. The Director of the National Theatre of Bucharest, Ion Caramitru himself, closed the entire Masterclass by inviting the graduates to work with the actors in the process of including supertitles on stage. The students have been studying supertitles and working for the National Theatre of Bucharest for a year now.
For five days, MTTLC students have been shown various ways of "stealing" rather than studying the secrets of one of the oldest professions in the world—the one that is closely related to the Tower of Babel and to Rosetta Stone. The aim of these many encounters has been to bring well–translated books to Romanian readers in the very near future, and also to make Romanian writers accessible to English–speaking readers. The University of Bucharest is supporting in this way the profession of literary translation from and into English.

Un masterat care nu duce către o profesie necesară pe piața forței de muncă este un program ratat: el va dispărea mai devreme sau mai târziu. Proiectul acestui Masterclass de Traducere Literară este în același timp un proiect academic, literar, editorial și de promovare a literaturii române pe glob.
În perioada 25–29 noiembrie 2019, la Universitatea din București, a avut loc a V–a ediție a Masterclass–ului de traducere literară „Lidia Vianu's Students Translate.” De data aceasta, 17 traducători literari, două agente literare și un manager cultural au discutat și au lucrat împreună cu studenții Masteratului pentru Traducerea Textului Literar Contemporan (MTTLC).
Intenția organizatorilor [Lidia Vianu și Headsome Communication] a fost să îndrume studenții către profesia de traducător literar, care în mileniul trei capătă cu totul alte dimensiuni—având în vedere că engleza a devenit limba întregului glob, și că orice autor își dorește să fie accesibil cititorilor din toate țările, prin intermediul unei traduceri în limba engleză.
Printre profesioniștii pe care studenții au avut ocazia să îi întâlnească de–a lungul celor cinci zile se numără traducătorii literari Mihaela Buruiană, Ionela Chirilă, Dan Croitoru, Iustina Croitoru, Vali Florescu, Mihaela Ghiță, Bogdan Ghiu, Iulia Gorzo, Radu Paraschivescu, Luana Schidu, Claudiu Sfirschi–Lăudat, Miruna Voiculescu. Au fost prezentate masteranzilor Uniunea Scriitorilor, Asociația Română a Traducătorilor Literari, editurile Humanitas, Polirom și Art, agenția de comunicare Headsome Communication. Două agente literare cunoscute, Livia Stoia și Marilena Iovu, și managerul cultural Oana Boca Stănescu au propus masteranzilor stagii de internship, și le–au explicat ce înseamnă profesia de agent literar. Profesorul și regizorul Nicolae Mandea (UNATC) le–a vorbit masteranzilor despre specificul supra–titrării pentru scenă. Directorul Teatrului Național București, Ion Caramitru însuși, a încheiat Masterclass–ul la Sala Media a TNB, și a invitat masteranzii la un stagiu de aplicare a supratitrării la Teatrul Național, având în vedere că masteranzii lucrează la supratitrare de un an încoace.
Timp de cinci zile, li s–a arătat tinerilor învățăcei cum să „fure” tainele uneia dintre cele mai vechi meserii din lume, aceea care se legitimează prin Turnul Babel și Rosetta Stone. Scopul acestor întâlniri este ca, în viitorul foarte apropiat, să aducă cititorului român cărți bine traduse, dar și să trimită scriitori români în universul anglofon. Universitatea din București promovează, astfel, profesia de traducător literar din și în limba engleză.
