A Lexicon of Common Scandinvian in Finnegans Wake,
compiled by C. George Sandulescu.

The Lexicon of Common Scandinavian in Finnegans Wake is compiled by C. George Sandulescu, and is published third after the Romanian, and Bonheim's German ones. They are all issued in the Joyce Lexicography Series.

Scandinavian, as a group of similar languages, is indeed important to Finnegans Wake. James Joyce's only pleasure trip on Continental Europe was to Copenhagen. The Lexicon takes in the considerable number of words and phrases of the three Scandinavian languages that are sprinkled in plenty throughout the book, and looks at them in their very close inter-relationship. Joyce makes his book all the more attractive, as he dramatically realises that, to the average outsider, Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian stand so close together that they are mutually intelligible.

The Book, and its corresponding Lexicon, are circumstantial proofs that James Joyce was the very first European: he was simply trying to say that Language comes before everything else. The secret of Finnegans Wake is quite simple: it says that there certainly is more poetry in one single word from across the border than in all literature put together.

Besides the solid one hundred-and-twenty-page Dictionary, the volume also includes several other texts — all of them useful tools to readers of The Book of Today, Tomorrow and Forever. They will certainly spur the reader's curiosity by properly slowMotioning Joyce's over-enigmatic text.

de C. George Sandulescu.

După Lexiconul român și cel german, publicăm al treilea volum din seria Joyce Lexicography, și anume A Lexicon of Common Scandinavian in Finnegans Wake, care are aproape de 200 de pagini. Autorul lui este C. George Sandulescu.

Limbile scandinave ocupă un loc extrem de important în concepția cărții lui Joyce. Singura călătorie de plăcere făcută vreodată de scriitor a fost la Copenhaga. Joyce a văzut de la bun început că suedezii, danezii și norvegienii se înțeleg între ei de parcă ar vorbi aceeași limbă. Lexiconul acesta examinează tocmai legăturile strânse dintre cuvintele și expresiile Scandinave din Finnegans Wake.

Prin ceea ce a scris, Joyce se ridică deasupra naționalităților și devine primul scriitor european din lume. El dovedește fără drept de apel că esențialul în literatură este limba: cel mai neînsemnat cuvânt din altă limbă decât a ta poate avea în el, latent, mai multă poezie decât toate Sonetele lui Shakespeare la un loc. Aceasta este rațiunea pentru care Finnegans Wake nu povestește ceva, ci există ca o lume în sine, cu o prezență reală printre noi toți.
