A Mary Shelley Reader

From Frankenstein to Dracula

This anthology of Mary Shelley’s fiction takes the readers back to the origin of horror books and then horror films. Often labelled as the Gothic Novel, her best known novel, Frankenstein, was published in 1818. The Last Man, her second novel, describes suns intruding into the Solar System, tidal waves, and other fateful events around the year 2100.

Mary Shelley’s books have been reprinted in a huge number of copies. Frankenstein and The Last Man are now ranked among the first science-fiction novels. They are both visionary books. The reader will understand from this second anthology of fiction which we are publishing — after David Lodge — that the contemporary concern with an apocalyptic future is no news... In this respect, Hollywood films have certainly increased Mary Shelley’s popularity. This Reader also offers an Introduction to Mary Shelley’s art, and a Chronology of her life and work.

From Frankenstein to Transylvania-born Dracula there is only one step. The two of them have often been associated one with the other. This anthology will, however, show that there is a more profound dimension to Mary Shelley’s prose.

Mihai Stroe’s selection has put together the most intriguing excerpts of Mary Shelley’s fiction, in hopes of gaining her a renewed audience among learners of the English language and literature. We are faced with a novelist who around 1800 knew a lot about what 22nd Century fiction might become.

Frankenstein și The Last Man sunt considerate printre primele romane science-fiction.
