Contemporary Literature Press is publishing a second book in the series of Readers which began with David Lodge. This time we have chosen the work of a fiction writer who has won quite a number of prizes for his books, among which the Prix Médicis and the Man Booker Prize.

Julian Barnes belongs to the post-war generation. His stories are clear, his style is witty and tender at the same time. He has written novels, stories, essays, journalism. His books have been translated into almost fifteen European languages, among which Romanian. His themes range from life in a city to stories of a marriage, from the fall of the iron curtain to the history of literature, and the whole history of the world "in 10 ½ Chapters". His sense of humour has a hidden tragic face.

By publishing extracts from a number of Barnes's novels as Parallel Texts in both English and Romanian, we mean to offer readers in general, and students of English in particular, a taste of contemporary English literature in a nutshell.

Contemporary Literature Press publică un al doilea volum din seria de antologii care a început cu David Lodge. De data aceasta am ales romanele unui scriitor care a câştigat, printre altele, Prix Médicis şi Man Booker Prize.

Julian Barnes aparţine generaţiei postbelice. Naraţiunile lui sunt clare, caracterizate prin inteligenţă muşcătoare şi tandreţe disimulată. Pe lângă romane a scris povestiri şi eseuri, a tradus din limba franceză şi a făcut jurnalism. Căţile lui au fost traduse în aproape cincisprezece limbi europene, printre care şi limba română. Temele romanelor pendulează între istorii citadine şi căsătorii, căderea cortinei de fier, istoria literaturii şi istoria lumii "în 10 ½ capitole". Umorul este nelipsit, dar este întotdeauna însoţit de un zâmbet amar.

Publicăm aceste fragmente din romanele lui Julian Barnes sub formă de texte paralele în limba engleză şi în limba română în scopul de a oferi cititorilor precum şi celor care studiază limba engleză o imagine a literaturii engleze contemporane, la care intenţionăm să adăugăm în timp şi alte volume asemănătoare.
