What is Graphotactics?

In this presentation we go down below the level of the word. We are now at the level of the LETTER.

Graphotactics simply means the 'arrangement of letters' — and Joyce was highly interested in it — as against phonotactics, 'the arrangement of sounds.' Which is far better known by phoneticians.

By comparison, graphotactics has never been systematically studied. But it is impossible to understand at least segments of Finnegans Wake without paying close attention to it. The order of letters is for Joyce as important as the order of words — perhaps even more important.

Next point to remember is that letters — just like phonemes — do not carry meaning. An individual letter taken separately carries no meaning at all.

But Joyce manages to extract poetry and to make it shine from the idiosyncratic arrangement of individual letters — called graphemes.

Hence graphotactics: their arrangement, with Joyce, is as important as phonotactics is with, say, Gerard Manley Hopkins. Attend to that!

This volume contains the preliminary elements of future research in this most difficult field.

Ce este grafotactica?

În această abordare coborâm sub nivelul cuvântului. Ne aflăm la nivelul LITEREI.

Grafotactică înseamnă 'ordinea literelor' — deosebit de importantă pentru Joyce — în vreme ce fonotactica este 'ordinea sunetelor'. De cea de-a doua se ocupă foneticienii.

În ce privește grafotactica, însă, aceasta nu a fost niciodată studiată sistematic.

În absența ei, este imposibil să înțelegem chiar și segmentele foarte scurte din Finnegans Wake. Ordinea literelor este pentru Joyce la fel de importantă ca și ordinea cuvintelor — poate chiar mai importantă decât ea.

Un lucru esențial este că literele — ca și fonemele — nu au un sens. O literă luată separat nu are absolut niciun înțeles.

Și totuși Joyce izbutește să facă poezie din astfel de litere, să le dea viață, prin simpla ordonare idiosincratică a ceea ce numim grafeme.

De aici și termenul de grafotactică: pentru Joyce, ordinea grafemelor are exact aceeași importanță pe care o are fonotactica pentru un poet cum ar fi de pildă Gerard Manley Hopkins. Iată o direcție de cercetare.

Volumul pe care îl publicăm acum este etapa preliminară necesară în studiul acestui domeniu atât de complicat, de care ne vom ocupa în volumele următoare.
