This is the first systematic attempt ever to put together and begin to coordinate the research done over many years on the languages in Finnegans Wake.

The idea behind the whole series of Lexicons is based on the possible concept of a Dictionary in the Head for a number of languages, parallelling N. Chomsky's Linguistic Intuition.

After the volumes devoted to Romanian, German, and Scandinavian languages, the present volume brackets together a bunch of more than twenty languages, ranging from French to all the Slavonic ones. The Introduction gives a few clues about how to read a book which is written in more than one single language. Finnegans Wake is suited to such an approach, as it evinces many similarities with Tristan Tzara’s kind of collage. In addition, Joyce was as obsessive in his literary preoccupations as Brancusi himself was with his relatively few images. The main feature of this book, and of the volumes in the same series, is that it brings increased Precision to literary studies, particularly when they focus on the texts of great difficulty. There is also far greater attention paid to the rhetorical implications which inevitably arise from the simultaneous use of a multiplicity of languages.

This Volume Five in the series thus becomes its very centrepiece and, as such, it is dedicated to James Joyce’s grandson, Stephen, whose 80^th birthday we have just celebrated in mid-February. Everybody knows these days how attached the author James Joyce was to his whole family, circumstantial proof thereof being the two short fairy-tales exclusively written for his grandson. The series is not yet complete: there are other volumes that will follow, not only about the Romance languages, but also about English itself.

Acest volum este o premieră. Pentru prima oară în istoria studiilor Joyceene, el adună la un loc limbile folosite de James Joyce în Finnegans Wake, într-o încercare de a le descifra rostul.

Seria de Lexicoane pe care o publicăm completează noțiunea de Intuiție Lingvistică a lui N. Chomsky cu o idee nouă: ideea că este vorba, în cazul lui Joyce, de un Dicționar mental poliglot și simultan.

Am publicat până acum Lexicoane care se ocupau de locul limbilor română și germană și al limbilor scandinave în Finnegans Wake. Ne îndreptăm acum atenția către mai bine de douăzeci de limbi, de la franceză la numeroasele limbi slave, toate adunate într-un singur volum. Introducerea la acest volum sugerează cum anume se poate citi o carte scrisă în mai multe limbi deodată. Din acest punct de vedere, Finnegans Wake se apropie de intenția colajelor lui Tristan Tzara. Pe de altă parte, obsesiile literare ale lui Joyce au în ele ceva foarte asemănător cu cele câteva imagini care l-au obsedat pe Brancusi. Lexicoanele Joyce pe care le publicăm, inclusiv acest Lexicon al limbilor "mici", aduc studiilor literare o  precizie necesară, mai ales atunci când ele se ocupă de texte de maximă dificultate. Pledăm, de asemena, pentru cercetarea consecințelor  retorice ale folosirii simultane a atâtor limbi.

Acest al cincilea volum devine astfel punctul central al seriei. Tocmai de aceea îl dedicăm nepotului lui James Joyce, Stephen, care a împlinit 80 de ani la jumătatea lunii februarie a acestui an. Se știe cât de mult ținea James Joyce la familia lui. Dovadă stau cele două scurte povestiri scrise special pentru nepotul său. Seria noastră de Lexicoane continuă: vor urma limbile romanice și în final chiar limba engleză.

Toată seria de Lexicoane Joyce a fost recenzată de ziaristul și anglistul Sorin Ivan în ziarul Tribuna Învățământului, unde prezintă Contemporary Literature Press. Interesul pentru opera lui James Joyce s-a reaprins în România.
