Contemporary Literature Press,
under The University of Bucharest, in permanent conjunction
with The British Council, and The Romanian Cultural Institute,

Announces the publication of the bilingual volume
of English and Romanian poetry

compendium of translated poetry

compiled by C. George Sandulescu and Lidia Vianu
(ISBN 978-606-92388-1-3).

This 700-page volume began as a help in teaching the Theory of Translation to Romanian students, but developed into a Guide to the history of poetry for all ages and stages of learning — mainly as a tool for life-long education.

It is the most comprehensive volume CLP has published so far. It is also its first interactive volume: it accepts submissions for all untranslated poems in its pages. If the proposed translations sent by readers are up to standards, they will be published alongside the original poem, in what is now a mere blank space — for the poems whose translation into English or Romanian has never yet been attempted.

Almost 300 poems have been included, most of them in the original and its translation. They cover over 1200 years of poetry, both English and Romanian, chronologically arranged. Since this book aims mainly at a Romanian readership, it makes a point of publishing the best Romanian translators, as far as copyright laws allow it. These translators thus become the teachers of the young generation of 2011. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, they have practically made the rules. They have also mapped the History of English poetry for Romanian minds, and have attempted at making Romanian poetry known abroad. All these are the goals of the Contemporary Literature Press, too.

G. Sandulescu opens the volume with an Introduction on the Principles of Translation. He adds to the body of translated poetry the following Appendices: Research Lexicon: A Listing of Literary Devices discussed in Rhetoric; English Literature along the Ages up to 1901; Romanian Author Chronology; The Thomas PERCY Glossary. All these are tools that a translator of poetry from or into English cannot do without.

Every bilingual poetic text has an Info Box, whose main aim is the FrageStellung part: a means of helping potential future translators solve problems that their predecessors may not have been aware of.

The compendium of translated poetry is available for consultation and downloading as from 23 April 2011 on the following internet address:

Comunicat de Presă
Bucureşti, 23 aprilie 2011

Editura pentru Literatură Contemporană,
sub auspiciile Universităţii din Bucureşti,
în colaborare cu Consiliul Britanic şi Institutul Cultural Român,

Anunță publicarea volumului bilingv de poezie
engleză și românească intitulat

compendium of translated poetry

alcătuit de C. George Sandulescu și Lidia Vianu
(ISBN 978-606-92388-1-3).
