As to the Theory of the Novel,
the very First & the very Last

Let us assume that The Satyricon is a novel, though there are voices, not many, which deny the fact.
Let us assume that Joyce knew The Satyricon extremely well in detail, on account of his Latin in a Catholic University. That is why he studied Italian. In this way, he practically covered all Romance languages, and his stay repeatedly sojourned in Zürich took care of his German. Joyce could write fluently in Italian (even published newspaper articles for money), French (he lived in Paris practically half of his life), and Danish and Norwegian because he corresponded with Henrik Ibsen in both these languages.
As part of the series Joyce Lexicography, we are publishing now The Satyricon, by Petronius, in Latin, English, Romanian and French. The readers who will go from this text, written in the first century, to James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, finished in 1939, will certainly find for themselves the connection between the two.

Conform teoriei romanului,
