Comunicat de Presă Bucureşti, joi 24 ianuarie 2013 sub auspiciile următoarelor foruri: Universitatea din București, The British Council, Institutul Cultural Român și Ambasada Irlandei Dickens in a Nutshell editat de Lidia Vianu. (ISBN 978-606-8366-38-8, 111 pagini) La 7 februarie 2012, Charles Dickens (1812-1870) ar fi împlinit 200 de ani. Sărbătorirea lui, acum și în alte dăți, este o recunoaștere a faptului că lumea lui este încă vie. Dickens este pentru cititorii lui și Mr Pickwick, și David Copperfield, și Mr Dombey, Pip, ori Martin Chuzzlewit. Mini-antologia aceasta, pe care am intitulat-o Dickens in a Nutshell, se adresează tuturor vârstelor și tuturor gusturilor. Romancierul englez are câte ceva pentru fiecare, fie că e vorba de fraze care stârnesc râsul, ori de situații care ne țin cu sufletul la gură, și care duc la un sfârșit fericit ori tragic. Am adunat în doar 111 pagini texte care provoacă hohote de râs, zâmbete ironice și sentimente pe care le veți descoperi citind. Volumul se deschide cu o listă a tuturor cărților lui Dickens în ordinea publicării lor în volum. Fragmentele alese din romane sunt însoțite de un număr mare de ilustrații, toate aparținând edițiilor de acum cel puțin o sută de ani. Această mică antologie Dickens, publicată de Contemporary Literature Press, la aproape un an după aniversarea nașterii romancierului victorian, are mai presus de orice un scop didactic: este o unealtă în predarea limbii și civilizației engleze, un instrument care îl îmbracă pe Dickens în haina acestei noi invenții — și anume cartea electronică. Antologia noastră este numai un început. Sperăm ca acestui prim volum să se adauge cât de curând un roman, sau mai multe, scrise de Charles Dickens, în traducerea unora dintre colaboratorii noștri. Până atunci, textele acestea scurte, variate și însoțite de ilustrații amuzante, vor capta interesul școlarilor, al adulților tineri sau mai puțin tineri, al celor care își reconsideră experiența din persepectiva vârstei. Dickens este un autor care a fascinat în secolul al XIX-lea bunici și nepoți deopotrivă — iar volumul pe care îl publicăm acum, la două sute de ani de la nașterea lui Dickens, arată că, la urma urmei, omul nu s-a schimbat chiar atât de mult. Press Release Bucharest, Thursday 24 January 2013 under The University of Bucharest, in conjunction with The British Council, The Romanian Cultural Institute, and The Embassy of Ireland Dickens in a Nutshell edited by Lidia Vianu. (ISBN 978-606-8366-38-8, 111 pages) Charles Dickens would have been 200 years old on 7 February 2012. When we celebrate him, we acknowledge the survival of his world. We remember him as Mr Pickwick, David Copperfield, Mr Dombey, Pip, or Martin Chuzzlewit. This tiny anthology, our Dickens in a Nutshell, simply shows that something in Dickens must go on. Is it the lives that he released into our world? Is it the fact that one of his eyes laughs, while the other is clouded by tears? In a Romanian fairy tale, a king laughs and cries while ruling a world which he may own, but cannot improve: "A fost odată un împărat despre care toată lumea știa că un ochi îi râde și unul plânge, dar nu spusese nimănui de ce." (Once upon a time, there lived a king. Everybody knew he laughed with one eye, and cried with the other, but the king never told anyone the reason why.) Ioan Slavici, Romanian prose-writer (1848-1925) from Trans-Sylvania, entrusted us with this king's life. The king's story is long forgotten, but the words "laughs and cries" still go on. They are the simplest of tunes, which haunt the mind in spite of itself. The short excerpts in Dickens in a Nutshell, chosen from almost all the novels that Charles Dickens (1812-1870) ever wrote, are an attempt to make the readers of 2013 become aware of and trace back these inherited mind-tunes: Great Expectations, Bleak House, Hard Times, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby. Teachers still use these texts in order to teach the English language to students of all ages. Dickens in a Nutshell is, therefore, mainly a didactic volume. It so happens that it also contains many refrains of our memory. At a time of "best quotes" on the Internet, here is real Dickens, and his power to hypnotise readers again and again, even from the pages of this new device: the eBook.
