Two pairs of words explain the need for this Rumanian Lexicon of Finnegans Wake: Irish Ruman and Limba romena. Both come from an enigmatic book which is not yet a novel. Finnegans Wake is, however, the most fascinating story about forty languages of the earth coming from one and the same root. It is a challenge to think both back and ahead. When Joyce states that history is a nightmare from which he is trying to awake, he is very far from complaining: actually, he challenges all his readers to follow the researcher's calling. Reading Finnegans Wake turns fast into solid linguistic research. As nobody has really "cracked" all the enigmas in this text, the way is still open, and invites curiosity and thought...

As for Romanian and Joyce, as to why and how Romanian is undeniably there in Joyce's text, C. George Sandulescu's three introductions to his Lexicon of Rumanian in Finnegans Wake explain the following: that Romanian is a very important Romance language; that Languages were central to all Joyce's writings; and that his friendship with Constantin Brancusi in Paris is certainly the key to a direction in Joyce studies that, strange enough, has never been pursued so far.

This Lexicon is more than just linguistic research, though. At long last, it becomes a breath-taking detective progress: "Why was Joyce's neat List of Forty Languages, written in his own hand, precisely on the very last page of the Manuscript of Finnegans Wake, the one with the date and place of writing? Why is it such a fair copy, so easily intelligible and elegantly written? Then, why forty languages exactly? Why is this List so fairly strictly internally structured?"

The author himself is a traveller of languages. He is familiar with Romanian, Swedish, French, Italian, English, German, Danish, Norwegian, Corsican, Arabic, Japanese, Irish, Monegasque, and Maltese. The main statement made by his Lexicon is that "Rumanian tends to be, with Joyce, almost as important as Irish" for "obscure, and cryptic, reasons" which it is "the honest and sincere researcher's job to find out". The mention of Plevna in Ulysses seems an adequate prelude. The author explains that it meant "the definitive failure of any Turkish advance into central Europe, and, as such, in a most sophisticated way, it preserved intact the integrity of most of the forty European languages." Remember that the armies at Plevna protecting the West had been led by the Romanian King himself!

Last but not least, this book is published online on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the eleventh year of the third millennium. Which can be a homage paid to Joycean coincidences, on condition that the book falls into the right hands.

Două perechi de cuvinte - Irish Ruman și Limba romena - amândouă în același paragraf din Finnegans Wake, sunt cele mai potrivite să anunțe de unde a pornit ideea acestui Lexicon de cuvinte românești. Finnegans Wake este o carte enigmatică. Roman sigur nu prea este. Pe de altă parte, este o poveste fascinantă despre patruzeci de graiuri care au fost cândva unul singur. Ne provoacă să regândim trecutul și viitorul. Atunci când Joyce scrie că istoria este un coșmar din care vrea să se trezească, el nu se plânge câtuși de puțin de povara timpului, ci face apologia lecturii ca iscodire. A citi Finnegans Wake chiar este iscodire - este cercetare lingvistică. Există acolo enigme încă nedezlegate... Calea este deschisă curiozității și reflecției.

În ce privește legătura lui Joyce cu limba română, cum și de ce a ajuns irlandezul la ea, cele trei introduceri ale lui George Sandulescu la Lexicon of Rumanian in Finnegans Wake explică următoarele: româna este importantă printre limbile romanice; graiurile pământului au fost pasiunea de căpătâi a scriitorului Joyce; apropierea lui de Brancusi la Paris este fără îndoială cheia unei direcții de cercetare a operei lui Joyce care, lucru inexplicabil, nici nu a fost observată până la apariția acestui Lexicon.

Volumul de față, însă, nu este pur și simplu cercetare lingvistică. El se folosește de tot felul de cuvinte care, treptat, treptat, ne hipnotizează: "De ce a plasat Joyce Lista celor Patruzeci de Limbi, scrisă de mâna lui, pe ultima pagină a manuscrisului Finnegans Wake, alături de data și locul unde și-a încheiat cartea?" Și mai departe: "De ce este lista aceasta scrisă atât de voit clar și inteligibil? De ce cifra patruzeci? Ce exprimă structura bine chibzuită a înșiruirii?"

Autorul acestei cărți are el însuși cunoștințe de română, suedeză, franceză, italiană, engleză, germană, daneză, norvegiană, corsicană, arabă, japoneză, irlandeză, monegască și malteză... Ideea lui centrală este că "româna este la fel de importantă ca și irlandeza pentru Joyce", din motive enigmatice, pe care numai o căutare avizată și profundă le poate afla. Punctul ei de plecare ar putea fi menționarea orașului Plevna în romanul Ulysses. Semnificația momentului este prezentată de autorul Lexiconului ca "eșecul definitiv al înaintării otomane în Europa centrală, ceea ce a însemnat indirect păstrarea intactă a majorității celor patruzeci de graiuri." Pentru că, să nu uităm, armatele care la Plevna au apărat Occidentul au fost conduse chiar de Regele României!

Lexiconul acesta apare online în a unsprezecea zi a celei de-a unsprezecea luni a celui de-al unsprezecelea an al mileniului trei. Ca un omagiu adus întregii filozofii a coincidențelor Joyceene.
