John Mole: The Memory of Gardens.

With John Mole’s The Memory of GardensAmintirea grădinilor, Contemporary Literature Press continues the series of present-day English poets published in both Romanian and English. The volume we are publishing now is a sequence of poems written between 1975 and 2011. The Romanian translation belongs to Daniela Călinescu. The poems are followed by a long interview granted by the poet to his translator, and her essay on John Mole’s work.

John Mole (b.1941) is a poet, critic and musician. He has been Poet in Residence at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and visiting poet at the University of Hertfordshire, from which he has received an honorary doctorate. A regular reviewer of poetry and books about jazz, he has also compiled and presented poetry programmes for BBC Radios Three and Four, including Poetry Now, Poetry Please, and Time for Verse, as well as features on Robert Graves (one of his earliest influences and mentors). For many years, with its founder Peter Scupham, he ran the Mandville Press, publishing a wide range of contemporary poets in hand-set editions. He has been adviser to the British Council for their series Writers and Their Work. On a number of occasions, as a jazz clarinettist, he has combined poetry and jazz in festival performances both with his own quartet and with fellow poet-musicians.
