Elena Ștefoi was born in a Moldavian village. She left it and went to school in a small Moldavian town. From there she went to Bucharest as a journalist. After the fall of communism, she also became Doctor of Philosophy. She then went for a while to Ottawa, where she was Romania’s ambassador to Canada. What she always was and is, is a poet.

Născută într-un sat din Moldova, Elena Ștefoi a plecat la școală la oraș, iar mai târziu a plecat ca ziarist la București. După căderea comunismului și-a luat doctoratul în filosofie. Apoi a plecat din nou, de data aceasta la Ottawa, unde a fost ambasadoarea României în Canada. În tot acest timp și în toate locurile unde a dus-o viața, Elena Ștefoi a făcut ce știe ea mai bine, adică poezie.
Cartea de poezie pe care o publicăm acum conține poeme scrise de Elena Ștefoi despre Canada. Versurile au fost traduse în limba engleză de Ana Olos, fondatoarea secției de Studii Canadiene la Universitatea din Baia Mare. Cititorul va găsi în Gramatica Turnului Babel povestea unei poete, ziariste și ambasadoare născute în comunism și care are mai multe povești de spus decât toate limbile pământului
